If you want to date a vintage bicycle and it has chrome parts, it is generally accepted that it would have been made from 1930 onwards, or updated. SERIAL NUMBERS. As the interest in vintage road bicycles grows, serial number data bases grow too. In other words, though not all bicycles are represented with an on line serial number data base, some are. Raleigh, is the first that comes to mind but others are available. Trek bicycle frame serial numbers (SNs) are stamped into the bottom of the bottom bracket, or (more rarely) at the lower end of the seat tube. The dates coded in the serial numbers, or the dates inferred from the numbers, are dates of brazing or dates on which the new frames were stamped with serial numbers (serialized).

So a couple of years ago I bought a second hand Raleigh record ace. I stripped it down then didnt get much further due to other commitments. Recently rebuilt it with some non standard components and was wondering about it's heritage.
The serial number stamped on the BB begins with Wd90. Refx nexus maschine. Some googling reveals that this probably meant it was built in worksop and was either 79 or 89 judging by the frame - that's about where I come unstuck.
